Ableton Live 7.0 Released

Ableton has just released version 7.0 of their wonderful music software. There's a handful of top grade software programs out there, Live is one of them. For DJs, it's the killer app and is causing my love affair with Sony Acid Pro to wither. On stage or in our studio, Live will give you a lifetime of enjoyment. Just check out how much the people that make this software love it. I think their passion translates directly into your user experience.

JazzMutant Lemur

If you think the Tenori-On is cool, then check out the Jazzmutant Lemur! It's the best live controller ever made, with bongo drums coming in at a close second. If you have a spare $2,999.00, Robotspeak will send one to you. Or you could have them send one to me.

See JazzMutant's site for the nitty gritty.

Tenori-On

The Tenori-On instrument/controller. Designed by Yamaha's Yu Nishibori. Doesn't it look cool?!

Mel Cheren, remembered.

Mel Cheren has passed away. Founder of the quintessential 70's dance/disco label, West End Records, Mel took his love and understanding of dance music to heights few people can match. Lucky for us, he shared his experiences in the classic book: My Life and the Paradise Garage (Keep On Dancin'). A friend gave me this book in the late 90's and I found it a fascinating, personal account of the birth (and demise) of the disco era. Give yourself a treat and check it out. His West End label was THE pulse of dance music in the 70's. And today, the label is alive and well, offering up it's catalogue to the new generation of music lovers on sites such as Beatport and, naturally, the West End site. Thank you Mel for your passion and productivity. We will, Keep On Dancin'!

Suddenly I'm inspired to do a early style set (before the show tonight) of West End classics and disco house for the cocktail hour warm-up period. Please I beg ya don't be askin' for Flo Rida, ya oughtta know by know I don't play that schtuff.

Spiders On Drugs

Drug soaked spider sagas.

Indians Stomp To The Beat

Stompin' to a classic!

Strike It Up - The Writer's Strike

They need to start a website to help fund the writers while on strike.

Until then, it's good to know exactly why they are fighting back.

Word to self promoting whores

Listen. If you're a dj and promoting yourself on the web, don't post remixes done by other artists and then not credit those remixers. And then take credit for 'your mix' by omitting the credit where credit is due. It's called lying by omission, ya tacky bitches. Show some respect for the people who give you the music to make you oh so hot.

It's no secret musical artists are having a hard time making money these days. The least you can do is give proper credit to them. If you are a fan of dance music at all.

I've been sitting on this sentiment for too long now. Ahhh, all better.

Kristine W "Walk Away"

Finally I've found a proper vid for Kristine's latest hit. Tony Moran on the remix.

Starkillers "Discoteka (Kobbe & Austin Leeds Mix)"

While trying to find the video for Starkillers newest single, "Big Base," I stumbled on this well done amateur video for Starkillers biggest track, "Discoteka." Nice one!

ADULT. "I Feel Worse When I'm with You"

Jeez this gives me a headache. I'm sorry for posting this already. but, it's nutz so here ya go. No I will not play this in a club LOL. You're welcome.

The Pipettes - Your Kisses are Wasted On Me

Have you heard about the UK retro-darlings, the Pipettes? Damn the chorus is hooky.

Benny Benassi "Who's Your Daddy"

This vid may require you to verify you're old enough to see naughty things. Don't get too excited, it's not so naughty. At least not compared to the usual webfreak fest.

Remixes of this one are hot!

Tim Deluxe, Simon Franks Don, Terry Donovan "Let The Beats Roll "

Tim Deluxe gets it up.

Just Jack "Starz In Their Eyes"

Jus Jack writes some catchy tunes.
Ode to building 'em up just to knock 'em down.
Watch out, it's the pop machine.

Dave Gahan "Kingdom"

Depeche Mode's frontman apparently still likes it dark, broody, and compelling. Remixes are hot.

Mika "Love Today"

Check the falsetto. And the remixes.

Junior Senior "Can I Get Get Get"

This is just aww sweet. a little too sweet? Nah.

Dirty Sanchez - Youth In Asia

Possibly the best painted lips yet. Awesome vid! Raverz in Tokyo, yess.

Peter, Bjorn & John "Young Folks"

I like drums. I like bassline. And hulk the bongo boy.

Cazwell "Watch My Mouth"

Cazwell, kinda like the cuz of the Gay Pimp.

Cazwell "All Over Your Face"

Cazwell revamps a classic a la Loose Joints and Chi-Town diva Dajae.

Scissor Sisters "Kiss You Off"

This 70's rock vibe leaves me leaves me thinking about the ubiquitous rock star bulge so popular during the 70s. The Sister's write songs. This one's a breakup track.

LCD Soundsystem "All My Friends"

A moody little number. He just won't crack a smile. Awww. It's gonna be OK.

I got hugz for you.

Paul Oakenfold "Faster Kill Pussycat"

This tune is a little old by now, but I like the video. And still like the song.

Bodyrox ft. Luciana "What Planet You On"

Electro vox hotness.

Silosonic "Something (to make you feel alright)"

OK, so this is the worst 'video' ever- but an incredible track.

Tony Moran & Martha Wash "Keep Your Body Workin'"

OK, so this is a mediocre, unofficial video- but a great track.

Faithless "Music Matters" (Axwell Remix)

Music Matters Music Matters Music Matters
I Love You I Love You I Love You

Bat For Lashes "What's A Girl To Do"

Here comes Halloween, girl.

The Gay Pimp "Lookin Cute/Feelin Cute"

At it again...

Pete Tong's Fast Trax Show

Quick & easy way to sniff the UK dance music scene. The one and only Pete Tong promotes the best of the new batch on a regular basis. Keep his show on your hotlist.

Don't forget- he promotes bedroom artists on the show, so if you are sitting on something hot, music or video, send it his way. You can become an instant sensation. Just add water and stir with Tong's swizzle stick.

John Malkovich stars in: Color Me Kubrick (A True...ish Story)

John Malkovich giving a funny and tender performance in Color Me Kubrick- a film based on a con artist Alan Conway, who impersonated Stanley Kubrick with limited success. I watched it 3 times. Buy it; it's on DVD now. I'm Stanley Kubrick.

Christopher Guest: movie clips

OK, so maybe I have too much time on my hands today. But sitting here and watching the Iraq War Report is giving me heartache. Browsing and sharing a few movie clips provide welcome distraction.

I love Jennifer Coolidge in Best In Show, and was hoping to find her popcorn scene, but the soup scene is hysterical as well.

Catherine O'Hara having a meltdown in For Your Consideration.

Fred Willard as a manager in A Mighty Wind. Wha'Happened?

Jane Lynch, the butch lesbian, and Jennifer Coolidge, the lipstick lesbian, commune in Best In Show.

Finally, the incomparable Parker Posey steals the Starbucks scene in Best In Show.

Christopher Guest is one of those people who make the world a better place with his work. His casting is flawless, and his loyalty to the chosen actors builds a unique depth and connectivity throughout his films. Watch one. Laugh long time.

A message plus: Out of Office"Hands Up", David Guetta "Love Is Gone", Freemasons "Rain Down Love", Mason vs Princess Superstar "Perfect Exceeder"

Before we get into a few videos, a little info re: last Saturday night.

Due to recent modifications in the booth, when I began playing the sound system wasn't right. I am not the kind of guy who messes with other people's stuff, so I just sat there and became increasingly confused, looking at every knob on the board etc to see if it was something I overlooked. Eventually the owners came in and fixed the problem and voila- back to normal. Some cords were disconnected behind the amplifiers. I was sweatin' bullets until then- could barely think! So, anyone there early on, well just wanna let you know there were technical issues with the sound system, not me! It was an honest mistake, and thank God the owners made it right! Saved my ass for sure. From then on, I was feeling Grrreat. Strong like bull. It is so fabulous to see old and new faces mixing together, having fun. Good times indeed! That is why I have been doing this for so long. The love. The fun. Pay no attention to the dj when I'm there- YOU are the main event!

Out of Office "Hands Up"

I dig the nerds. And the tune.

David Guetta feat. Chris Willis "Love Is Gone"

There's French pop and then there's the king of the Parisian gay club sound which has filtered throughout the known universe. David Guetta is a *rockstar* DJ and Chris Willis has got an incredible set of pipes.

Freemasons "Rain Down Love feat. Siedah Garrett"
The Freemasons can do no wrong. They have newer stuff out now (that I play), but for video this is hot. And a huge Summer anthem. I've already posted their newer video for Beyonce's "Greenlight", so check the archives. I'll try to limit the amount of clips per post, but if you don't have a fast connection, this blog in general will be something to skip.

Mason vs Princess Superstar "Perfect Exceeder"

Not so new, not so old either. Either way, mash-up heaven! So good in fact, they made a video.

And now for something completely...Ken Nordine

So I was in this used record store and the owner was playing this old, scratchy vinyl. Jazz poetry I guess they call it. He couldn't sell me the vinyl cause it was rare and his only copy. And then I forgot who the artist was, and when I went back the store was shut down. Anyrate, I finally figured out it was Ken Nordine. These aren't the tracks that caught my ear, but it's the best I could find on YouTube. Don't worry, I won't be playing this track in a club! I'll add to this post as I sort through the net. But for now, enjoy this little poem set to light muzak!

An Amazing Athenian: Cal Clements

One of my favorite things about living in Athens GA is all the amazing people you meet.
Cal is one of them. He maintains a really fantastic site/blog, and if you have a little spare time on your hands, check out his glorious chronicle of adventure.

Beyonce, Axwell, Armand van Heldon, Avalon Superstar, Dada, Fergie, Bjork & Michel Gondry

Green Light - (Freemasons Radio Mix) - Beyonce

AXWELL - 'I FOUND U' The song is so hot, they finally made an official video. Yessss!

Armand Van Helden 'I Want Your Soul'

Avalon Superstar - All My Love their first hit and still good after a year or two

Dada Ft Sandy Rivera & Trix : Lollipop Been out a while, still lickable.

Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry (Hommer Remix)Homebrew video, oh well, dance remixes don't get the respect they deserve. This is the remix I've been playin'.

Björk - Human Behaviour (by Michel Gondry)Michel Gondry is my favorite video creator. I used to play the 12 minute Underworld version back in the days at the 40 Watt. My vinyl collection....I stopped getting vinyl in 2000. If I ever do a night based on this stuff it will (well it probably won't happen) but I'd call it "VinylTastic". Currently, it is most satisfying to me to play current dance. But there's no foul in warm 'n fuzzies. And rules were meant to be broken. But for now, just enjoy this exquisite video from the enigmatic Bjork and the hottest video dude alive; Michel Gondry....I love you, I envy your talent, I suck up anything I can find with your name attached. What a combo here: ENJOY!

As I've mentioned, YouTube (or more likely record companies) have decided to disallow some videos to be embedded in sites/blogs. And that's fine. I love YouTube. Just let it open in their own window. Just come back to UP ALL NIGHT (my blog) for my current and recurrent fascinations.

And rent/buy this DVD of Gondry's work. It's great, especially the bonus stuff.

YouTube videos on this blog

Oh well, some of the embedded videos on here are no longer allowed to play anywhere but on the YouTube site. Not a big deal- if you click on one of those videos they just open in another window and play. So the job gets done.

I really like using the Mozilla Firefox browser. One of the reasons being I can have a bunch of tabs open at once.

The Video was made by Fred&Annabelle of France.

Link Me Up

Aside from videos and stuff on Up All Night, there's also an artist news section on djisaacm.com.

I highly recommend Jason's MySpace page. Hot assortment of djs and producers, and always a fresh house track in his audio player. We've been a couple for eight- count 'em- eight years now! That's 54 in dog years.

None of our sites give away music, they just ain't those kinda sites. We hope you appreciate that!

It's ALL about playing live at a dance party!

Photosynth, Digg, Internet Archive

Photosynth is this really cool software that knits pictures into 3D space. And it has an insane zoom feature. I want!

If you don't already, check out digg.com for all kinds of news and video. It's decent.

I just discovered the Internet Archive website. And it's been around over 10 years. It's huge! The vintage cartoon section is fun, stop by and say hello to Betty Boop.

Telecom Giants Want It All

Map of the internet. Courtesy opte.org.

H.R. 1788, a bill introduced to the Congress by Rep. Michael Ferguson (R-NJ), requires the FCC to "rechannelize the public safety spectrum (located in the upper 700 megahertz band) to accommodate commercially available broadband applications." That means Ferguson wants to commercialize what has been public domain. The effects would effectively ruin the concept of a free flowing, democratic internet. The internet we enjoy today would be crippled by a series of "tollbooths" where you pay up to get surfing abilities we currently take for granted. It would destroy net neutrality, putting an evil squeeze on smaller community sites, small internet business, and the dream that anyone with an internet connection can create the next e-bay or whatever. If you don't want the internet monopolized by gigantic corporations, speak now or it may be a lot harder to do so down the line.

The following links will help you learn more about the issue and get involved.

Ditching DRM

Exciting to hear EMI and Apple are leading the way to DRM free music. Now you don't need an i-pod to enjoy i-tunes, and there's plenty great mp3 players that aren't i-pods. Word is they're going to improve sound quality while they're at it, which is/has been an issue with i-tunes. Surely fans are going to appreciate no restrictions on use and improved sound. Critics worry that it will create more piracy, and I agree. However, I think dropping DRM will attract more customers and offset sharing. We'll all know in a year or so. And as a bonus, the smug, exclusive hipster image from Apple's ad-campaign has been busted. Now you can buy your junk at the dollar store. Sweet.

EXP

Got any Yma Sumac?

Welcome. It's kinda random.

I can't think of anywhere better to start than Yma Sumac, known as "The five-octave queen of exotica". (see spaceagepop.com)

Mainly I love the picture. Almost looks like she's wearing headphones.
