Mel Cheren has passed away. Founder of the quintessential 70's dance/disco label, West End Records, Mel took his love and understanding of dance music to heights few people can match. Lucky for us, he shared his experiences in the classic book: My Life and the Paradise Garage (Keep On Dancin'). A friend gave me this book in the late 90's and I found it a fascinating, personal account of the birth (and demise) of the disco era. Give yourself a treat and check it out. His West End label was THE pulse of dance music in the 70's. And today, the label is alive and well, offering up it's catalogue to the new generation of music lovers on sites such as Beatport and, naturally, the West End site. Thank you Mel for your passion and productivity. We will, Keep On Dancin'!
Suddenly I'm inspired to do a early style set (before the show tonight) of West End classics and disco house for the cocktail hour warm-up period. Please I beg ya don't be askin' for Flo Rida, ya oughtta know by know I don't play that schtuff.
